God’s children through the ages have seen it as a comfort that Christ is returning to judge the living and the dead. He returns as Judge. In the midst of all kinds of sorrow, and under persecution of enemies, it comforted them that he is returning. Even while realising their own weaknesses and sin, it comforted them that he is returning.
And now the only reason why it is a great comfort that this great divine Judge is returning—the Judge who never overlooks any sin—is the firm and sure knowledge that this Judge is also our Saviour at the same time.
Because, beloved people, when Christ spoke this word that he would again return to us (John 14:3), it was the eve of his suffering and death. He who will return on the clouds, first surrendered himself to death. He himself took our place before God’s judgment. When he returns as Judge, it will be the same Man who took the curse away from us and placed it on himself. When he returns, it will be the same Christ who is now preparing us in his care and love for his return. Oh, how the meeting with this Christ, who showed us his great love, will be a matter of overwhelming joy!
Let us now also listen to him when he comes to us in his Word, and not withdraw ourselves from his work.
Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus! And let anyone who does not love him be accursed (1 Corinthians 16:22).1

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
