You can start the sermon with the question: what do you long for in your life? Perhaps for your illness to be cured, a different job, to pass your exam, to find a husband or a wife? Those are good desires. But when these desires are fulfilled, is that then your deepest joy? This passage shows us something else.
Jesus solves this man’s greatest problem first: not his illness, disability, or lack of money, but his sin. He would not really help you if he solved all your problems but did not take away your sin and healed your broken relationship with God.
The question is: what would you like to hear, that you are healed or that you are forgiven? This is a question to think about!
In this sermon you can explain that the human being, Jesus, is equal to God. He had the power to forgive, but he had to die on the cross for this.
Thus, for Jesus, forgiving sin was more difficult than healing someone, because he had to bear the cost of it himself.
You can also pay attention to the friends of the paralytic. In their faith and trust (Mark 2:5), they brought their friend to Jesus. Who could you bring to Jesus?
1 And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home.
