  2. Exposition

To what does “the heavenly places” refer?

Ephesians 1:3 (ESV)

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

In short

The heavenly places refers to:

  1. The dimension where Christ currently dwells with God the Father, or

  2. The final destiny of those whom God has blessed.

We know from Scripture that God dwells in a spiritual dimension normally called heaven, and that Jesus joined him there after his resurrection and ascension. We also know that the spiritual blessings we receive have God as their source, who dwells, as has been said, in the heavenly places. Added to this, Paul references the heavenly places several times in the letter to the Ephesians, and on each occasion he is referencing a location. Taken together, and when Paul refers to the heavenly places in Ephesians 1:3, it is most plausible that Paul is referencing the location where Christ currently dwells with God the Father.

Since believers are destined to join Jesus in heaven at the fulness of time, and this is when believers will receive every spiritual blessing, some authors think that the heavenly places refers to the final destiny of humans. This is possible, but since we participate in the spiritual blessings of Christ even in this life, this seems unlikely.

It seems most likely that Paul is referring the place where the spiritual blessings originate, not humanity’s final destiny (even if the heavens is humanity’s final destiny).

Interpretation 1:
The heavenly places refers to the spiritual dimension where Christ is now seated with God the Father.

Summary:

The physical universe where humans dwell is a location. God endowed humans with the ability to comprehend this location with the five senses through scientific investigation. As such, we call the physical universe a realm, created by God and discoverable by humans. The Bible reveals that there is another realm that is entirely separate from the physical universe, often referred to as heaven.1 Jesus dwells there with the Father, and from that location governs all of reality, including our physical universe.2 This means that the spiritual blessings with which God blesses us originate not from the realm of the physical universe but from a spiritual dimension, accessible to humans, not through the sense but through faith in Jesus Christ.

Interpretation 2:
The heavenly places refers to the final destiny of those whom God has blessed.

Summary:

God has blessed us through Jesus Christ to participate in every spiritual blessing. At present, we are blessed because of our hope for what is to come. In the future, when we reach the heavenly places, every spiritual blessing will become a reality.
