Verse 5 indicates that both the worshipper and the priest had different duties in preparing the animal. The worshipper was to kill the animal in the presence of the Lord. The verb “to kill” (šḥṭ) occurs seventy-nine times in the Old Testament. It is often used in the context of the ritual slaughter on an animal (for more information see Leviticus 1:6).
5 Then he shall kill the bull before the LORD, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall bring the blood and throw the blood against the sides of the altar that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
