Why was the use of honey prohibited?

Leviticus 2:11 (ESV)

11 “No grain offering that you bring to the LORD shall be made with leaven, for you shall burn no leaven nor any honey as a food offering to the LORD.

Honey was an important element of sacrifice in Canaan, Mesopotamia, and Syria in ancient times. Due to the use of honey in pagan worship, it may have been prohibited in this instance.
