By mentioning these duties, the Lord exposes the failures of the Levitical priests in Malachi’s day. They failed in all these respects. They failed as teachers. They failed in turning people from sin. They failed in their own walk of life. Instead of being a source of blessing for God’s people, they only compounded Israel’s unfaithfulness.
