Christ as the great “I am”

Exodus 3:14 (ESV)

14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

The one who was, is, and will be, is the One who knows and observes all that is happening on the earth and he is with us (Exodus 3:12). The Lord Jesus made this particularly clear when he taught the church that he was the manifestation of the great I am on the earth, and that he had come to bring salvation. Although there is some debate about whether or not Jesus was publicly declaring that he was the exact representation of the being of God in all of the famous seven I am statements in the Gospel of John, it does seem clear that this is the very point our Lord Jesus was making in John 8:58 when he said, Before Abraham was, I am. In his grace, the Lord God made his dwelling among us. Through Jesus Christ, the manifestation of the outpoured infinite love of God, we may know the one true God. We may rejoice every day in the glory of his essence, for the Lord has become our God and Father through Jesus Christ.
