1 Thessalonians 5:19 (ESV)

19 Do not quench the Spirit.

Because the Greek says “to pneuma” we really have to think about the Holy Spirit in this verse. We humans apparently have the uncanny ability to hold back the working of the Spirit (see Ephesians 4:30). It is possible to quench the Spirit…by such matters as…despondency, idleness, immorality and the like...1

Indirectly we are here urged to be inspired by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16). Then our life becomes oh so fruitful (Galatians 5:22–23)!
