Despite the horrors of the cross, Psalm 22:19–21 reveals that the Lord Jesus did not lose faith, did not lose hope, did not lose confidence. The Lord would not disappoint him. So he cries out full of trust, and asks the Lord to draw near, to be his strength, to deliver him from those dogs and lions and wild oxen. The rest of the psalm—Psalm 22:22–31—points us to Easter Sunday. There we find David praising God among his brothers. So God answered his prayer, and more importantly the prayer of his Son too. Jesus was not abandoned; God did not forsake him, even as he lay in the grave. Death was not victorious!
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
