The Ethiopian and Philip have travelled further and then the Ethiopian sees water—an oasis or wadi in the desert. He stops the chariot. In the meantime, Philip has travelled with him for quite some time and could explain a lot about Jesus, as well as about baptism, faith and repentance, and the Spirit! That the Ethiopian asks to be baptized suggests that Philip has told him much about what happened in Jerusalem only a few months ago—about Jesus’ crucifixion and death, burial and resurrection, and the ascension and Pentecost. With his request for baptism, the Ethiopian shows us how much he longs to follow Jesus!
