The mention of the death of Moses ties the material of Joshua 1:1–18 to the end of Deuteronomy 24:1–22.1 Moses died on the plains of Moab (Deuteronomy 34:5). He did not enter into the land of Canaan. He died after he had given several speeches explaining to the people about their history and what God expected from them in the land of Canaan (Deuteronomy 1:1 – 33:29). Moses was 120 years old when he died, and the people of Israel wept for thirty days after his death (Deuteronomy 34:7–8).
