A conspiracy is being formed against Amaziah. He becomes aware of it and flees, but he dies by the hands of murderers forty-five kilometers further in a fortified city. A similar death as his father Joash (2 Kings 12:20–21) and his grandfather Ahaziah (2 Kings 9:27–29).
We may see that as an execution of God’s judgment, verbalized by Nathan to David: therefore the sword shall never depart from your house
(2 Samuel 12:10). 2 Chronicles 25:27 gives as reason for the conspiracy that Amaziah turned away from the Lord, and one should not read it so that it would only apply to the last years of his life. It is “from the time when he turned away from the Lord” that things began to brew.
19 And they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they sent after him to Lachish and put him to death there.
