In many of the expositions on the Song of Songs, you will find the opinion that Song of Solomon 3:1–5 represents a dream. Yet the text in no way hints that this is a dream. We do better to take this section as a real event. These verses also show very clearly that in Song of Solomon we are dealing with a husband and wife who are married. We see this in the fact that they have gone to bed together. They sleep in the same bed. The woman wakes up. She reaches for the other side, but he is no longer there. She looks beside her but does not see him.
1 On my bed by night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but found him not.
