What does this sign of the leprous hand teach?

Exodus 4:7 (ESV)

7 Then God said, “Put your hand back inside your cloak.” So he put his hand back inside his cloak, and when he took it out, behold, it was restored like the rest of his flesh.

If you have ever wondered who is in control of contagious diseases and health in your country, this sign will give you your answer. The Lord gives health and he takes it away again, according to his plan.

But there was more to this sign, because skin diseases such as leprosy made a person unclean and unable to enter the sanctuary of God for worship. God made Moses unclean in an instant, and then made him clean again. The sign of the healed hand makes it clear that the Lord chooses (elects) whom he makes clean. Israel would not be leaving Egypt because they were more worthy of God’s love, but because God had graciously chosen to bring them to his temple so that they could serve and worship him. We can see how this second sign also points us to our Lord Jesus Christ, who revealed that he was God with us by taking on the uncleanness of his people so that they could be purified.
