Leviticus 4:1 – 5:13 deals with an offering called the ḥǎṭṭāt (sin offering). While the previous three chapters of Leviticus were outlined according to the value of the sacrificial animal, in Leviticus 4–5 this is less important. The main distinction in these chapters is between intentional and unintentional sin. Living in a sinful world means that one is confronted with the effects of sin: contamination, corruption, disease, and death. These things render a person unclean and defiled. These chapters teach that a holy God could not dwell in an unclean or defiled sanctuary. Cleansing was required before people would enter into his presence.
