1. Leviticus 4:3 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is significant about the bull from the herd without blemish that the anointed priest must offer?

Leviticus 4:3 (ESV)

3 if it is the anointed priest who sins, thus bringing guilt on the people, then he shall offer for the sin that he has committed a bull from the herd without blemish to the LORD for a sin offering.

The grave nature of the priest’s sin is highlighted by the valuable animal he was to bring to the Lord. A bull was the largest animal that was prescribed for the purification offering. The only other occasion where it is mentioned is where it concerns the sin of the whole nation (Leviticus 4:13–21).
