In Leviticus 4:1–35, the reader was introduced to laws and regulations regarding the sin offering. This new chapter deals with specific situations that may have arisen with regard to that sacrifice. To put it another way, Leviticus 5:1–13 serves as a kind of appendix to Leviticus 4:1–35. The general description of the sin offering is followed by specific cases that lie outside the norm, but which require a sin offering.
