Ezra 2:1 (ESV)

1 Now these were the people of the province who came up out of the captivity of those exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried captive to Babylonia. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town.

Notice the following: to his own city. These people were born and raised in Babylon for the most part, and yet their identity was not Babylon. Their identity was not the land of their captivity. Their identity was the city where their forefathers and their inheritance was: in the land. That was their identity.1
