1. Zephaniah 1:15 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What do the terms “darkness, gloom, clouds, thick darkness” convey?

Zephaniah 1:15 (ESV)

15 A day of wrath is that day, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

These words are very significant. The desolation that the day of the Lord brings will touch the cosmos, making it what it was before the ordering hand of God transformed it—the light of sun and moon are gone. Humankind set out to rule without God, but this rule has brought back the primeval meaninglessness of Genesis 1:2.1 The terms express God’s fierce presence and a reversal of creation (from life to death, from light to darkness) for those he is punishing.2
