Sin is first and foremost against God. David asserted the truth of this statement when he confessed his sin against God: Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight
(Psalm 51:4). David had sinned against Bathsheba, Uriah, and the entire nation, but more than anyone else, he had sinned against God. Humans may categorize their sins into the serious, the mediocre, and the insignificant. To Zephaniah…the mere fact of sin excited and merited the whole weight of divine rage.

17 I will bring distress on mankind, so that they shall walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD; their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung.
