13And the king of the Ammonites answered the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel on coming up from Egypt took away my land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; now therefore restore it peaceably.”
The king’s claim was false. At the time Israel came up from Egypt, the land was occupied by the Amorites, not the Ammonites (Numbers 21:21–35), as Jephthah will make plain.
