What is “300 years” a reference to?

Judges 11:26 (ESV)

26 While Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, 300 years, why did you not deliver them within that time?

This number, most likely an approximation given its roundness, points to the time from Israel’s arrival and settlement in the territory north of the Arnon to Jephthah’s day. The number was likely intended to make an impression on the king.1
