  2. Exposition

To what does the burnt offering refer?

Leviticus 6:9 (ESV)

9 “Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering. The burnt offering shall be on the hearth on the altar all night until the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it.

The burnt offering in Leviticus 6:8 does not refer to those offerings which the Hebrews would bring to the temple of their own accord. Rather, this offering refers to the daily burnt offerings which were offered by the priests every morning and evening on behalf of the community of Israel (see Numbers 28:3–8). These offerings were first introduced in Exodus 29:38–42.
