  2. Exposition

In what way will the Holy Spirit empower the apostles?

Acts 1:8 (ESV)

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

In the Old Testament, the Spirit is active in creation (Genesis 1:2; Psalm 33:6), sustaining life (Genesis 6:17; Psalm 104:29–30), empowering people for works of service (Numbers 11:17, Judges 14:6, Judges 14:19), and bringing revelation and wisdom (1 Samuel 10:10, Isaiah 48:16, Ezekiel 11:5–25, Micah 3:8). When the Spirit comes at Pentecost, he will empower the apostles to do their task of bearing witness to the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ.1 As a result they will speak boldly of Christ (Acts 4:33; Acts 6:8–10) and work miracles that attest to the truth of their words (Acts 2:22; Acts 3:12; Acts 4:7; Acts 8:13; Acts 10:38; Acts 19:11).2 Jesus’ miracles were seals by which the truth of the doctrine of Christ was established and confirmed and the effect declared. In the ministry of the apostles we will see the same pattern (signs and the Word) in the same relationship (miracles confirming teaching).3

The disciples will be equipped with wisdom and knowledge, boldness and love.
