1. Acts 1:13 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Is there any significance to the list of names of the apostles?

Acts 1:13 (ESV)

13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James.

The list of names appears to be arranged in order of prominence, with Peter and John being mentioned first. It is possible that John was the only disciple to see Jesus’ crucifixion (John 19:25–27) and James was the first apostle to be executed (Acts 12:2). The Philip in view is not the same Philip who would later serve as a deacon (Acts 6:5).1 From the list of names, only Peter, James, and John will be mentioned again in Acts.2 Of note also is the fact that Judas, the son of James, is otherwise known as Thaddaeus (see Matthew 10:3).
