1. Acts 1:14 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

For what were the apostles praying?

Acts 1:14 (ESV)

14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

The Greek text emphasizes the persistent and continuous nature of their prayer.1 Most probably, having been promised the coming of the Holy Spirit in power, they were praying for God to act and bring this same promise to completion.2 At almost every important turning point in the narrative of God’s redemptive acts in Acts there is mention of similar prayer (Acts 1:24; Acts 8:14–17; Acts 9:11–12; Acts 10:4, Acts 10:9, Acts 10:30; Acts 13:2–3).3
