1. Acts 2:24 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the difference between the pangs of death and the hold of death?

Acts 2:24 (ESV)

24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

The pangs of death suggests pain (similar to that in childbearing) whilst the hold of death suggests an inability to escape or break free. Since Jesus is life (John 14:6) and the only righteous man who ever lived, he could not be held or defeated by death.
