A list of seven different people groups are mentions by Joshua. Such lists are found five times in Joshua (Joshua 3:10; Joshua 9:1; Joshua 11:3; Joshua 12:8; Joshua 24:11) and on twenty-four occasions in the Old Testament as a whole. The listing of seven nations probably refers to completeness. The fact that these people are commonly listed as separate nations shows a contrast between the diversity among them and the national unity that was so important for Israel.1 Elsewhere in the Bible, these peoples are described as being stronger and more numerous than the Israelites (Deuteronomy 7:1).
