What does it mean for the people who were baptized to be added to the number?
Acts 2:41 (ESV)
41So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Luke indicates that the new disciples were formally added to the existing community of professing believers (Acts 1:15) and thus received into membership of the church.1 In keeping with Jesus’ command (Matthew 28:19–20) they were baptized before being taught more extensively (Acts 2:42–47).2
41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
