Psalm 7:12–14 (ESV)

12 If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword; he has bent and readied his bow;

There are two streams of thought here: the Lord attacks the enemy with various weapons, or it is an earthly enemy who attacks. I find it hard to choose but have selected the latter.

The enemy remains a threat for David. All sorts of weapons are aimed at him. He attempts to destroy David’s life. Those attacks come from a depraved heart. It is full of disaster. You can taste the demonic influences in this. Whatever brews inside of you, will exit forcefully.

Enmity can come from within your own people: Saul, Absalom; and of course, from foreign nations. Often the wicked are members of the covenant, who act as if God does not exist.

Psalm 50:16 reads, But to the wicked God says: What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips? Wickedness also tends to hide behind pious talk and friendly behaviour, as can be seen in Psalm 62:4b, They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Also, the tongue can be a great evil, as per Psalm 5:9 and Psalm 12:3.

Just like Saul, the king of God’s people, who misbehaves, 1 Samuel 15:23, 1 Samuel 28:10–14.

In the New Testament, we learn that whoever follows Christ, may endure enmity and persecution.

Matthew 5:10–11 reads, Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 2 Timothy 3:12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted… We can go back to Cain, in 1 John 3:12, We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother…because his own deeds were evil.
