John had said that it was not about himself but about someone who came after him. By linking to John’s message, Christ shows that he is that person. Those who listened to John and Jesus came into the light and would be delivered from (the shadow of) death.
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
