Living with “perhaps”

Zephaniah 2:1–3 (ESV)

1 Gather together, yes, gather, O shameless nation,

What do we do with the perhaps you may be hidden of Zephaniah 2:3? Zephaniah does not offer a way of escape from or survival on the day of the Lord. He only offers the possibility of shelter by seeking the Lord, gathering together in repentance and humility, (Zephaniah 2:1), and in clinging by faith to the righteousness of God (Zephaniah 2:3). The prophet urges the people to gather together to seek the Lord, as they have no hope beyond perhaps.

Yet this perhaps of God is surer than any security the world has to offer. The remnant in Zephaniah’s day could cling in faith to the perhaps of God. For us today, there is a sense in which we have more than a perhaps, because of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. The perhaps of the prophets has become the promise of Christ’s presence.1
