At the time, the apostles were responsible for distributing funds to care for church members who were in need (see Acts 2:45; Acts 4:34–35). On top of this they probably also had their own funds which they used to buy food and pay for accommodation. It is thus not the case that the apostles had no money available to them.1 Going up to the temple, however, it is possible that they did not have any money with them at the time. Where Jews would take money to the temple in order to buy the animals needed to bring sacrifice, the apostles would no longer be doing this on account of Jesus Christ having brought an end to the old covenant sacrificial system (Hebrews 7:27 – 8:13).
6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”
