Peter draws attention to what the prophets foretold in order to emphasize the fact that Jesus’ death was not arbitrary or the result of a tragic accident. Even though it was engineered and carried out by human beings, it was nevertheless also the climax of God’s plan of salvation (cf. Isaiah 53:12; Luke 22:22; 1 Peter 1:20–21).
