In this verse, the next three characteristics of believers are listed: the righteous is he who does not slander with his tongue, does no evil to his neighbour, nor takes up a reproach against his friend.
The tongue is a small but powerful part of the body, and slandering leads to grief for the victim. Slander and lies also occur within God’s covenantal community but should never be allowed to continue. Those who make themselves guilty of this (without repentance) cannot expect to remain members of the household of God.
