Psalm 29:1–2 consist of a call to acknowledge the majesty of God in four parallel sentences. The Hebrew text literally says sons of God
instead of heavenly beings
(ESV). Therefore, the psalm may be referring either to angels or kings and judges—those in a position of power in the land - as they are sometimes also called sons of God
. Other commentators believe that sons of God
may also refer to the gods
of the nations.
1 Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
