Psalm 34 is designed to make humble people glad. Who are these humble people? David was probably firstly referring to those who had followed him to the cave, fleeing from Saul’s oppression and the exorbitant taxes they could not pay.
However, not all poor people are humble, and not all humble people are necessarily poor. Humility is a matter of attitude, not social position. The Hebrew word for humble, “anawin,” literally means bowed or bent. The humble are those who suffer under the load of abuse inflicted upon them and looked hopefully toward God as the only one who could help them. Waiting patiently on God is the hallmark of the humble.
2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad.
