The harsh words of this verse can be read as a plea for vengeance, or as a proclamation of God’s curse. We should remember that Saul and Doeg committed terrible atrocities—acts that deserved the death penalty. The people they killed were priests, those given a special task to be servants of God. The priests acted as a type of cover
for the ordinary Israelites against the holiness of God. Therefore, Saul’s deeds were not just horrific, but it also threatened the people. Moreover, he left himself unprotected before the wrath of God.
