Psalm 74:4–8 provides us with a detailed description of the destruction of the temple. The psalmist says to God that the enemies have roared in the midst of your meeting place
(Psalm 74:4), indicating the violence of the enemy. The Babylonians had laid siege to Jerusalem for one and a half years (Jeremiah 52:4–7). They burned the temple and destroyed the city walls (2 Kings 25:9–10; 2 Kings 25:13–17) and put the signs of their victory on Zion. The signs of ungodly rulers on the house of the Lord brought public shame to the name of God.
4 Your foes have roared in the midst of your meeting place; they set up their own signs for signs.
