Some commentators have linked son of man
to a specific king, but it seems unlikely in a psalm using various symbolic images to refer to the people of God. The phrase man of your right hand
may allude to the name Benjamin, in which case Psalm 80:17 is about the tribe of Benjamin rather than a particular king. The psalmist pleaded with God to intervene on behalf of the weak tribe of Benjamin and to protect them from the mighty Assyrians.
17 But let your hand be on the man of your right hand, the son of man whom you have made strong for yourself!
