Who was the captain of the temple guard?

Acts 4:1 (ESV)

1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,

The captain of the temple guard was in charge of all temple affairs. After the high priest he was the most prestigious individual in Jewish society. His guard would have included about 200 men. They were responsible for maintaining order in and around the temple,1 having the legal right of arrest if there was a breach of peace.2
