  2. Exposition

How does Peter’s imagery of “stones” connect to his earlier imagery of“newborn” (2:2)?

1 Peter 2:4 (ESV)

4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,

The reality of newborns speaks to the existence of family, a household. Newborns, children, a household of necessity awakens in one’s mind the picture of a house. In fact, the word “house” can refer to either the family or the structure in which the family lives. A house (using the building materials of Peter’s days) involved stones. The imagery of newborns, then, automatically morphs into the imagery of a house.
