This is the first of three paragraphs in which Peter draws out the consequences of being sojourners and exiles in society. The present paragraph is more general in nature, the next two more specific, i.e., about the relation between slaves and masters (1 Peter 2:18–25), and about relations in marriage (1 Peter 3:1–7).
