What does the word “servants” denote?

1 Peter 2:18 (ESV)

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.

The term used here is not the usual word for slaves, often translated as “servants.” The present word is narrower in scope, referring specifically to household slaves. Household slaves laboured in the home and so the master (or mistress) hovered much closer than, say, a field slave would experience.
