What is the meaning of “gentle”?

1 Peter 2:18 (ESV)

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.

The term translated as “gentle” catches the notion of being considerate of the other. Some masters were indeed of such a disposition, with Potiphar’s approach to Joseph serving as a clear example (Genesis 39:4), and the result was that Joseph thrived even as a household slave.
