What does the word “this” refer back to?

1 Peter 2:19 (ESV)

19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.

The term refers back to the subjection Peter expects every slave to adopt in relation to his (overbearing) master. (This submission, of course, in turn recalls the subjection mentioned in 1 Peter 2:13 “to every human institution.”)
