Strictly speaking, the mention of Jesus’ suffering does not need the words “for you” to make his suffering an example to follow. Peter’s decision to include these words adds comfort inasmuch as Jesus’ suffering was more than an example; it was also for the benefit of those slaves now suffering under unjust oppression. More, much of what follows is lifted from Isaiah 53:1–12, a passage where the “for us” theme resonates through so clearly (in verses 5, 6, 11, 12).
