Peter had used the term “conduct” already at the end of 1 Peter 3:1, where it echoed his use of the term in 1 Peter 2:12. Now he adds the adjective “pure,” a word that (in Greek) means holy, chaste. The reference is not simply to marital fidelity but to an entire lifestyle reflecting a focus on the “inheritance” (1 Peter 1:4) that belongs to the reborn. It is a very different focus than the wife had before her rebirth.
