  2. Exposition

What is wrong about drawing the attention of others to one's external adorning?

1 Peter 3:3 (ESV)

3 Do not let your adorning be external the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear

The way to win an unbelieving husband for the gospel is not by drawing attention to the feminine body, for what it offers is passing. The gospel revolves around the “living hope” that is ours “through the [bodily!] resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” so that mortal, aging people today possess “an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading” (1 Peter 1:3–4). The godly wife will want to live from out of this perspective and so draw her husband’s attention to its glorious hope and blessings. Drawing (his) attention to the externals—whether hair, jewellery, or clothing—misdirects where his attention ought to be and fundamentally miscommunicates the hope you have.
