Peter in the next verse mentions one example of the holy women, that is, Sarah. Our thoughts may go to the wives of the other patriarchs, like Rebekah and Rachel, or to Jochebed or Bathsheba. Yet Peter’s point is not so much particular persons (with each of whom we will see failure in applying the principle) as the principle itself: revealing the hidden person of the heart through specific godly conduct has always been more valuable than externalities.
